Speed Limiters

There are two kinds of speed limiter: adjustable and intelligent. Eventually, all new vehicles will be fitted with Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems on the production line, and they are already fitted as standard (OEM) by many mass-production manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Ford, and Peugeot.

ISAs prevent a vehicle from exceeding a set speed. The accelerator can still be used, but speed will not increase once the set speed has been set. This is achieved by sensors monitoring how fast a car is being driven and the information is sent to the engine’s ECU (engine control unit). When the pre-determined speed is reached the ECU restricts the flow of fuel and air to the engine.

A speed limiter shouldn’t be confused with cruise control as the set speed is not maintained with a limiter as it is with cruise control, and it is worth noting that all speed limiters can be overridden by pressing hard on the accelerator, should you need to accelerate away in an emergency situation.
