Modern car and van engines are controlled by a computer called the Engine Control Unit (ECU). This very small computer controls many aspects of an engine’s performance and functionality, such as air/fuel ratio and boost pressure and many more. When these standard settings on a vehicle’s ECU are altered (remapped), the result is an increase in performance or economy, often both.

Engine remapping alters or replaces the standard setting in the ECU software, changing how it performs and can remove restrictions from the standard ECU. Remapping diesel cars and vans is only possible on later (turbo) diesel engines. Remapping a naturally aspirated (non-turbo) diesel engine isn’t worth the expense as the power gains aren’t significant enough.

You must inform your insurance company of any remapping as it is considered a modification. Failure to disclose this could result in your insurance being invalidated. This kind of modification may also invalidate your manufacturer’s warranty, if applicable.
